Chess

Chess is a sport that develops cognitive functions and benefits learners beyond just academics. At the same time, it fosters sportsmanship and discipline. Aliwal-North Primary School is privileged to offer learners the opportunity to learn and play chess. We welcome both learners who already know how to play and those who are new to the game.

Every third Monday from 14:00 to 16:00, learners are welcome to come and play with their friends.

Our main goal is to use chess to teach learners how to solve complex problems, think ahead, and make critical decisions—skills that contribute to valuable abilities learners can use beyond the chessboard. Chess teaches children to plan and analyse both on the board and in everyday life, and these skills can be applied in their daily routines.

Learners also enjoy the social interaction during chess sessions and develop holistically by playing amicably with each other. Learners who do not yet know how to play are encouraged to come and learn. Our chess sessions take place in a happy and safe environment, and everyone enjoys them!
