Athletics
Thanks to a group of dedicated and highly skilled coaches, athletics at Aliwal North Primary School is thriving.
Aliwal North Primary School hosts an inter-house meeting in January where two colour teams, namely Green and Orange, compete against each other. All learners in the school take part in this event.
A team is then selected to represent the school at the town meeting, where all the primary schools in Aliwal North participate.
After the town meeting, another team is selected to represent Aliwal North at a CMC meeting. At this event, schools from across the Senqu region compete.
Athletes who qualify there go on to participate in the Joe Gqabi meeting, where athletes from the different CMCs compete against one another.
A Joe Gqabi team is then selected to represent the Joe Gqabi region at the Eastern Cape Championships, where athletes from across the province compete.
Athletes who are selected for the Eastern Cape team represent the province at the South African Schools Athletics Championships (SASA).
Selection is subject to strict criteria, and athletes must qualify according to prescribed qualifying standards. Aliwal North Primary School produces a strong number of athletes each year who participate in the national championships.
During the fourth term, athletes also have the opportunity to take part in various meetings in Bloemfontein organised by Athletics South Africa.
