Chess is a sport that develops cognitive function and not
only benefit learners on an academic level but also enhance their sportsmanship
and discipline. Aliwal North Primary School provides the grade 4 to 7 learners
the opportunity to learn and play chess. We welcome learners with the ability
to play chess and also those who cannot play.
Every 3rd Monday, from 14h30 until 16h00,
learners are able to come and play along with friends.
Our main aim is to use chess to teach learners how to solve
complex problems, think ahead and how to critically make difficult decisions – all
these aspects contribute to valuable skills a learner can benefit from. Chess
teaches learners to plan and analyse on a board and also in real life. All
these attributes can be conveyed in to their everyday lives which will only
benefit them.
Learners enjoy the social interaction at chess practice and
playing friendly matches against each other improves their holistic
development.
Learners who cannot play is welcome to come and learn. Our
chess practice is a happy environment and we welcome everyone.
